The Role:

As a Unix Support Analyst you’ll provide general support to users of the company’s Unix systems, as well as providing support on specific, small-scale projects. Your duties will include:

  • Action, update and resolve logged support incidents in line with SLA commitments
  • Carry out regular system checks within required timescale
  • Undertake appropriate system housekeeping activities
  • Automate and improve everything you can - look for root causes and fix them
  • Participate in a rota for out-of-hours support
  • Deploy approved system changes
  • Produce and update support documentation
  • Produce regular reports
  • Management and administration of backup systems
  • Provide support for Business Continuity activities
  • Work to ITIL best practices

The successful Unix Support Analyst should have most of the following:

  • Unix system administration
  • Implementation and support of RedHat Enterprise Linux 6/7
  • Ubuntu
  • RedHat Satellite
  • Patching best practices
  • Implementation and support of RedHat OpenStack
  • Knowledge of enterprise backup solutions Networker
  • Experience of server builds
  • System security / Server hardening
  • Basic shell scripting
  • Desirable knowledge: Storage Systems (SAN), Networking and TCPIP stack, LDAP and directory services, Bind, EXIM Clamv, Spamassassin, Apache
  • Commitment to delivering a quality service
  • Excellent communicator both written and verbal
  • Able to take responsibility for tasks and see them through to satisfactory conclusion, even when this requires support from other people / teams
  • Ability to prioritise / reprioritise effectively and develop contingency plans
  • Able to work to agreed standards and practices
  • Can identify broken process and draft solutions
  • Understands customer needs as well as service commitments and is able to deliver to them
  • Able to produce high quality documentation in agreed format
